What does lifestyle photography mean? | Morgantown Photographer |
The Term "Lifestyle"
I want to talk a little bit about the word "lifestyle" in photography terms. It gets thrown around quite a bit and it is what some people use to describe my work.
The words we use to describe our work truly matter very little to me. What really matters is how my work makes those who view it feel.
But, us humans love to label things, so lifestyle it is.
What Is Lifestyle Photography?
Lifestyle photography is the perfect in-between of traditional portraits and documentary. With traditional portraits, everyone is perfectly posed, staring at the camera, and saying "cheese", usually resulting in awkward smiles, no emotion, and everyone being stiff. Documentary is exactly how it sounds. It is you, as a family, being followed around by a photographer and they capture what they see. They both have their place, but lifestyle is what holds my heart.
With me, lifestyle photography is me guiding you in ways that you show your true emotions, genuine connections, and real smiles. Knowing how to pull those emotions is something that took quite awhile to master. When I first began, I thought lifestyle was only candid, that the moments just happened. I quickly learned that families do not automatically start frolicking in fields and they needed guidance. Lucky for you, I know exactly how to do that!
Lifestyle photography is a more emotive approach to photography.
Lifestyle photography captures the essence of the families you're photographing. It includes movement, loving gestures, and storytelling.
Lifestyle photography means that you're going beyond the stiff and boring portraits to capture the true personalities behind the families you're capturing.
